Food is the optimum source for the nutrients the body needs, but supplements can act as a sort of insurance policy in case you may not be eating as well as you should. Lifestyle factors like stress, illness, depression, age, vegetarianism, pregnancy, lactation, smoking, alcohol and being overweight can tax your need for some vitamins and minerals. As well, farming and food storage and preparation techniques can deplete fruits and vegetables of some of their nutrients.

It is difficult to know how much of a particular vitamin or mineral you are actually consuming and how much you really need. Even a marginal deficiency in some essential nutrient can be detrimental to your health and wellness.

If you are concerned about this, or feel you may have some health condition that may benefit from a higher dose of one substance or another, consider taking a multivitamin or specific supplement(s) to enhance your diet.
